Flu Shots now available
About 20 percent of Americans get the flu each year, and the viruses that cause the flu are always changing.
A new flu shot is produced each year to protect against the most common strains.
That's why local pharmacies and doctor offices are administering this year’s flu shot.
Now a higher dose flu vaccine is recommended for patients ages 65 and older or are at a higher risk of developing flu complications.
"The high dose flu vaccine does contain a higher concentration of the vaccine. The reason that's needed is that some people do have a more difficult time developing an immunity to the virus," said Dr. Daniel Child with Blessing Physician Services.
A full immune response to the flu takes about two weeks to develop.
Getting the flu shot early can protect you *before* the peak of flu season.
Flu season typically starts at the end of November and early December.
