Texas troops plant orchard to help fight hunger
SAN ANTONIO, Texas —
Hundreds of airmen in San Antonio are proving once again that service to their country also means service in their community.
The airmen from Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland volunteered their time to plant more than 300 fruit trees across ten acres of land. San Antonio's Parks and Recreation department has donated a total of 50 acres to be developed during the next five years.
In addition to the fruit and citrus trees, there are future plans to grow vegetables on the property as well.
Eventually the development could produce 60 tons of food annually which will be distributed through the San Antonio Food Bank.
