Veteran 'X' aims to help combat veterans with peer to peer program

A new program is hoping peer-to-peer mentoring will help combat veterans adapt to their environments at home. Veteran “X” is a voluntary group with a certified specialist.

The group is hoping to get the conversation going between veterans and help them get over the challenges they're currently facing.

The peer-to-peer program will help veterans relate to one another and work with each other on a wide range of issues including:

-substance abuse

- depression

-PTSD

- homelessness

“We understand the things we go through, we understand the sleepless nights,” said veteran Shawn Bryan. “We understand the things that will irritate you, the things that make you happy and all the balances.”

This is a national initiative that's being implemented here in El Paso. The first group will have eight to 12 veterans who will each have assigned duties to complete. The program could last anywhere from 3 to 6 months.

The first session will start Thursday.
