Area athletes say varsity sports are not important anymore with the exception of football and golf. The explosion of club and travel teams is quickly making varsity sports almost meaningless.
“City leagues and club teams will take over unless something bizarre happens,” says longtime local basketball coach Tony Harper.
Former Hanks High School softball star Alex Moreno is now on scholarship at St. Mary’s University in San Antonio. She says it was her club team that got her in front of college scouts. “I played for Hanks just for fun, and to stay in shape,” says Moreno.
