A man has been arrested in an early morning robbery of an east El Paso convenience store.

It happened Monday just before 6 a.m. at the 7-Eleven store at 1490 George Dieter Drive.

There was broken glass on the floor and yellow tape blocking the front entrance, when CBS4 was at the scene reporting live for Daybreak.

Police said John Paul Prieto, 43, entered the store and argued with the clerk before taking cigarettes from the store. He also kicked a 19-year-old customer and then punched, kicked and threw another 18-year-old customer to the ground.

Police said he took the 18-year-old’s cellphone and then left the store, only to return moments later.

When he returned, police said he broke the front window of the store and then left again.

Officers in the Pebble Hills area responded to another call in the area unrelated to the robbery and located Prieto.

He was jailed on a $20,000 bond and charged with robbery, assault, burglary of a building and criminal mischief.
