A celebration of women at UTEP begins today

Tuesday kicks off the Celebration of 100 Years of Women at UTEP.

This is all a part of the 8th Annual Women's Conference.

Local, national and international scholars will be talking about women and gender-related topics.

They'll also address equality issues, social justice for men, women and LGBTQA at UTEP as well as national and global levels.

Guests will also get to hear from Dr. Diana Natalicio, who is the event's keynote speaker.

The dean of UTEP will talk about the contributions of women to the university over the past century.

This month, Natalicio gained recognition as one of Fortune Magazine's "Top 50 World Leaders."

And last year Time Magazine called her one of the 100 most influential people.

All events will be held at the Tomas Rivera Conference Center in the Union Building East, third floor:

April 11

- 10 a.m. Tuesday

United Nations Representative Lopa Banerjee will talk about the need for young people's activism for gender equality.

- 2 p.m. Tuesday

Oscar Aguilar, M.D. will give a presentation on debunking myths about health.

-10 a.m. Wednesday

Keynote speaker Diana Natalicio, UTEP President, will talk about the contributions of women to UTEP over the past century.

-1 p.m., Wednesday

Susa Zughaier, Ph.D., assistant professor in the Department of Microbiology & Immunology at Emory University School of Medicine, will offer a personal perspective on the challenges and opportunities for a Palestinian female Arab Muslim scientist.

-2 p.m., Wednesday

Manal Hamzeh, Ph.D., associate professor of the Interdisciplinary Studies Department at New Mexico State University, will discuss the documentary film "The Four Hijabs" and the making of Arab feminist art-based research.

A "100 Years of Women at UTEP" book release and museum exhibit reception will take place at the Union Gallery.
