Missing reports of undocumented immigrants dying while crossing illegally have surfaced
A report from CNN states the bodies of some undocumented immigrants crossing the U.S.-Mexico border have never been accounted for.
The report says 2,500 people died while trying to cross the border between 2002 and 2017 in Texas
, but an investigation found 74 additional border-crossing deaths in the state of Texas.
One of those was a man who drowned in a canal in the El Paso area four years ago.
However, CNN says U.S. Border Patrol officials reported zero deaths in 2014.
Border Patrol officials have since acknowledged the error.
Benjamin Huffman, with the U.S. Border Patrol, said his agency sometimes excludes deaths from local agencies because their standards are suspect.
Uncounted deaths were identified through a review of federal, state and local records, as well as interviews with medical examiners.
CNN says the count is still incomplete, and there could be thousands more.
