Arrested: Las Cruces man suspected of child abuse
LAS CRUCES, N.M. (CBS4) —
A man was arrested Thursday night on suspicion that he abused his girlfriend’s toddler, according to Las Cruces police.
Efrem Duran, 38, of 2405 W. Picacho Ave., is being charged with two third-degree felony counts of child abuse.
According to police, a home health caregiver witnessed Duran abusing the child, and the caregiver recorded a video on his cellphone before calling 911.
Las Cruces police arrived on the 1700 block of West Hadley Avenue to check out a report of child abuse.
The caregiver explained that he watched Duran pull the child by her feet, according to police, causing her to fall and strike her head on the floor. Investigators said the video shows Duran use the back of his hand to strike the child twice on her mouth before dragging her by her feet.
Investigators also said that bruising was visible on the girl’s mouth and face. Her injuries were not life-threatening.
Duran was arrested and booked into the Dona Ana County Detention Center where he is initially being held without bail.
