Police: Woman died after being struck by stop sign knocked over by alleged drunken driver

Police said a woman died when a stop sign hit by an alleged drunken driver fell on her.

It happened Wednesday just after 2 a.m. on N. Stanton Street and Mississippi Avenue near the Cincinnati District.

Lorenzo Anchondo, 26 was driving a Chevrolet Avalanche north on Stanton. He made a left turn on Mississippi and then drove onto the sidewalk and hit a stop sign, police said.

According to police, Xiaoyan Shi, 33 was on the sidewalk when the stop sign fell over and hit her.

Shi suffered a major head injury and died at the scene, police said. Shi was an employee at Del Sol Medical Center, according to hospital officials.

They issued the following statement:

We are deeply saddened by the loss of a member of our Del Sol Medical Center family. Our thoughts and prayers are with her loved ones during this difficult time.

Officers at the scene said Anchondo appeared to be intoxicated and was arrested. He was charged with intoxicated manslaughter and booked into the El Paso Detention Facility on a $75,000 bond.

Police said this is the 11th traffic fatality this year compared to 12 this time in 2016.
