Update: Driver dies in rollover crash on Highway 70 in Las Cruces
LAS CRUCES, N.M. (CBS4) —
The driver of an SUV involved in a rollover crash on Highway 70 on Monday has died.
Dan Trujillo, spokesman for the Las Cruces Police Department, said Jose Mejia, 28, was in a blue Suburban heading west on Highway 70 around 2 p.m. when he veered right, crossed Bataan Memorial West, jumped a curb near Highland Elementary School, and rolled several times before coming to a stop in an undeveloped lot.
It is believed that Mejia was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash and was ejected from the vehicle. He was rushed to Mountainview Regional Medical Center where he later died, Trujillo said.
Both westbound lanes on Bataan Memorial West and the right lane of traffic on Highway 70 west of Sonoma Ranch Boulevard had to be closed for a few hours.
