El Paso newest spray park opens Saturday in the Lower Valley

Pavo Real Spray Park

On Saturday families and their dogs are invited for an official grand opening of the Pavo Real Spray Park.

The opening starts at 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday at Pavo Real Park at 9301 Alameda.

The grand opening celebration will have a ribbon-cutting ceremony followed by a festive carnival atmosphere that includes free games, live music, free healthy food, and other family-oriented activities, said city officials.

The Pavo Real Spray Park features a splash pad with more than 20 water features, such as a large dump bucket, two large slides, water cannons, hanging spouts, and fountains that spirt from the ground. For comfort and security, the spray park has other amenities, such as park benches, shaded picnic tables, security lighting, security cameras, ADA accessible sidewalks and landscaping.

There is also a separate spray park designed for dogs, making it the City's first and only dog friendly spray park. The dog spray park is fenced and features a fire hydrant and water that spirts from the ground in unpredictable patterns.

The Pavo Real Spray Park is the third spray park completed by the City, costing about $2.2 million. Primary funding for the project was provided from the 2012 Quality of Life Bonds passed by the voters.

The spray parks operate by recirculating water through filtration and chemical sanitation systems, not unlike those found in pools. The typical water turnover is 30 to 60 minutes, which is the same for most wading pools. Customers control the water usage by depressing a button or passing near motion detectors. If there is no one playing in an area, then no water flows.

Additional spray parks are under construction throughout the City, one in each of the City Representative Districts. The City opened Sue Young Spray Park and Hidden Valley Spray Park in 2016. The following spray parks will open by the end of May:

  • Grandview Spray Park, 3100 Jefferson
  • Westside Park Spray Park, 7400 High Ridge Dr.
  • Marty Robbins Spray Park, 11600 Vista Del Sol Dr.
  • Braden Aboud Spray Park, 4325 Riverbend Dr.
  • Salvador Rivas Jr. Spray Park, 12480 Pebble Hills Dr.
