Hawthorne Street closure near UTEP to affect students, pedestrians and drivers

Access to some streets near UTEP will be limited this month.

UTEP says improvements will make the campus entrance safer for pedestrians and bike riders.

The Hawthorne closure will stretch from Rim to Crosby and last from approximately 5:30 p.m. through 5 a.m. starting Wednesday until Friday.

There will be a lengthier closure on Friday into Saturday at 5 p.m., leaving no access to the Mike Loya Academic Services building.

The enhancement project began late last year, When it's completed, there will be wider sidewalks, ADA-approved ramps, new landscaping and additional lighting.

Josue Talavera, a student at UTEP, expressed his frustration about the closures "It does cause a lot of frustration when one's in a hurry or has to get somewhere. "

David Macias, another student, said he was OK with these little inconveniences.

"As long as people can get over the fact that it's just going to be closed for a while there shouldn't be that big of an issue", said Macias.

A second project along Wiggins way will start soon after the Hawthorne project.

Campus officials asked that the work be done during the UTEP’s spring break next week.
