Kids fish free on Saturday at Ascarate

Ascarate Park (KFOX14/CBS4)

Children can go fishing for free on Saturday!

The Ascarate Fishing Club is hosting Kid Fish Derby. Children will be equipped with poles to fish for rainbow trout.

Lunch and prizes will be handed out, said event organizers.

The tournament begins at 7:30 a.m. and fishing will continue until 11 a.m.

Lunch will be provided at 11:30 am and the event concludes at noon with trophies and awards. Food trucks will also be present throughout the event. There will be a $2.00 parking fee per vehicle entering the park.

Interested participants can learn more about joining the Ascarate Fishing Club to support their free community programming.

Annual memberships are $15 and all funds go towards providing fishing experiences to community youth.

Ascarate Lake will be stocked with rainbow trout provided by Texas Parks and Wildlife on March 1. Lake water is tested for golden alga during winter stockings. All winter testing this season has been cleared for golden alga, indicating low or non-existent levels.

El Paso County Parks & Recreation wants to remind anglers that fishing at the lake requires a fishing license for anyone over the age of 17, and the daily bag limit at Ascarate Lake is 5 per angler, per day.
