Man accused of killing mother extradited to El Paso

Fernando Alarcon was arrested in connection with the murder of 62-year-old Graciela Acosta.

A man accused of killing his mother last month in west El Paso has been extradited to El Paso.

Police were seeking Fernando Alonzo Alarcon, 31, in connection with the death of 62-year-old Graciela Acosta, who was found dead in a townhouse on April 20.

According to court documents, a friend went to check on Acosta after not hearing from her for several days.

Alarcon eventually answered the door and initially said his mother was asleep; he later said he hadn’t seen her in four days, according to court documents.

He refused to let the woman inside the apartment and locked and closed the door behind him.

Acosta’s friend told authorities that she knew from the woman that her son was verbally and mentally abusive toward her, and that he had a habit of taking her cellphone and jewelry from her, the documents said.

The woman told authorities that she smelled a foul odor coming from the apartment when Alarcon left the apartment, the documents said.

She also said she saw him carrying a heavy bag that family members believe contained a rifle that was missing from the apartment, the documents said.

When police arrived, they found Acosta’s body covered with a sheet.

An investigator from the medical examiner’s office said the woman was decapitated, the documents said.

A bloody knife was also found next to the body.

Alarcon was taken into custody April 21 in La Mesa, New Mexico, by deputies from the Doña Ana County Sheriff's Office.

His vehicle was later returned to El Paso so that authorities could search the vehicle.

Court documents said authorities found a Winchester rifle, a gun case, a bloody blanket, a cellphone and Acosta’s debit card inside the vehicle.

According to El Paso County Detention Facility records, Alarcon was extradited to El Paso on Thursday evening.

Alarcon arrived in El Paso at 3:06 a.m. Friday.

A booking photo for Alarcon has not been released.

We will update this story as soon as Alarcon’s booking photo becomes available.
