EL PASO, Texas (CBS4) —
El Paso police have arrested a man associated with a local day care on child sex charges.
Police arrested 71-year-old Jose de Jesus Arteaga on May 29 on the 1300 block of Howze Street.
Authorities say Arteaga’s wife owns the Fun and Funny Daycare, near Trowbridge.
According to court documents, the day care center is held at a home that was once a duplex, which separated one part into a private residence and the other a day care.
Arteaga is accused of sexually assaulting a young girl frombetween August 2016 to May 2017.
According to court documents, the girl said when his wife was not around, Arteaga would take her into another room of the residence while other kids were playing outside or in the day care.
Court documents also state the girl said it happened numerous times and that she was afraid to go back to the day care.
Neighbors said the day caredaycare has been open a long time.
"I'm kind of surprised because, I mean, it's right here close to my house,” said neighbor Hector Hernandez. “So I never thought it would happen, you know?"
Hernandez said everything seemed fine from the outside.
"They seem happy. Like normal kids playing, you know?" Hernandez said.
CBS4 spoke with a woman whose nephew went to the day caredaycare. She did not want to be identified, but said her family also had some complaints.
"It's disturbing to me because he's a little boy, he's barely 2two years old!" the woman said. "They forced the toothbrush in his mouth for him to brush his teeth. Like forced! He was choking!"
Jail records show Arteaga is still living in the home, but he must stay at least 200 feet away from the young girl and her family.
"Hopefully they don't put their kids in that day care, daycare because you can't trust nobody nowadaus,”now a days the woman said.
CBS4 rang the doorbell at the day caredaycare several times throughout the afternoon, but no one answered the door. Our reporter also reached out to several of the couple's family members. Some of them were shocked to hear the news, and said they they don't know anything about the case and don't associate with that side of the family.
The Crimes Against Children unit is asking if there are any individuals who have had inappropriate interactions with Arteaga to call police at (915)212) 212-0382.
According to court records, Arteaga posted a $75,000 bond and was released on June 8.
