Mayor Leeser meets with Trump's cabinet members during Borderland visit

Mayor Oscar Leeser

Mayor Oscar Leeser got to meet with Attorney General Jeff Sessions and U.S. Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly Thursday afternoon.

They had a conversation about important issues in the Borderland and the effect they have on the rest of the nation.

The mayor said it wasn't really a meeting as it was more of an informative conversation.

He said he told them how important it is for El Paso and Juarez to have a good relationship.

“I talked about the relationships I've been able to build between Juarez and El Paso, and the interior of Mexico, and I talked about one economy, the two cities,” Leeser said.

Trade between El Paso and Juarez was a big topic of discussion, in particular, the uncertainty that's come from cross-border relations since President Donald Trump took office.

The mayor stressed the impact that cross-border trade has, not just on El Paso, but the rest of the country.

“If we ever hurt the economy of Juarez, it will hurt El Paso, and the rest of the U.S., and he was very receptive to that,” Leeser said.

The mayor says it was a productive talk, with all sides open to different perspectives.

He says it was important to highlight the positives that come from sharing a border with Mexico.

“He realizes that building a stronger relationship is how were going to continue to build El Paso,” Leeser said.

The mayor said he's going to the Capital next month to continue the dialogue.

He says he plans on meeting with the mayor of Juarez before he goes to see what they can share together.
