Non-Stop traffic in West El Paso due to 57 hour closure on I-10
It was graduation day at UTEP and those attending the ceremony had to deal with the 57-hour closure on I-10. The closure also is expected to impact people out celebrating Mother's Day on Sunday.
The closure is needed for Texas Department of Transportation crews to take down the steel from the old Sunland Park flyover ramp.
Those attending the UTEP graduation said they had to plan ahead in order to arrive at the event on time.
“That’s like our main freeway so the fact that it’s closed, it really does kind of throw you ...like how else are we going to get there because you don’t want to miss anything due to traffic,” said Jessica Cacho, from West El Paso.
“We were like OK should we leave even earlier. Are there extra side roads? Everyone knows with Mesa so is there another one? So we just went with Mesa and it wasn’t as bad as we thought,” said Melinda Quintela, from West El Paso.
Wayne Ramos is a manger at a Vacuum store located on Mesa. He said people uses the stores parking lot to avoid Mesa.
"When there is an opportunity, people fly down our parking lot and so it makes it very dangerous for a lot of customers that do business here." said Ramos.
Adrian Pratt lives in a neighborhood near Mesa. He said he is having to deal with the consequences of the closure due to drivers using their streets as a detour.
"You'd think school just let off, the traffic is so heavy right now," said Pratt.
While many say they will try to avoid the Sunland park area altogether. Others say they hope drivers will be mindful of their surroundings.
"When this is all said and done everything will be better because the projects are good projects," said Pratt.
The 57-hour closure by TxDOT started Friday night and I-10 is expected to reopen Monday
