Outdoor sporting goods chain opening at West Towne shopping center

West Towne Marketplace development located off Exit 8 of Interstate 10 near Paseo del Norte.

The West Towne Marketplace development is in its final stages before opening.

Cabela's will be the first retailer to open in the 63-acre West Towne Marketplace in northwest El Paso

This is the first Cabela's in El Paso and also the first layout of its kind for all of Cabela's locations.

"We are a Cabela's 3.0," Tess Clark, the El Paso Cabela's retail marketing manager, said. "We are the first store of this size, gearing in on the customer experience and outfitting each of our customers for their next outdoor adventure."

Aside from camping and fishing gear, the new location has a large firearms section with a gun hub. It's an interactive way to compare firearms and even test your shot.

"You're able to learn how to shoot and what you may be doing wrong," Clark said. "It's almost like an indoor gun range without the indoor gun range. You can try before you buy."

Cabela's, located at Interstate 10 and Paseo del Norte (Artcraft Road), is set to open Sept. 14.

Cabela’s has employed more than 130 full-time, part-time and seasonal employees to staff the store.

It’s one of three large anchors in West Towne. The others are at a Walmart Supercenter and a movie theater.

The developer, River Oaks Properties, said construction is on schedule for the rest of the shopping center.

Here are approximate dates from the developer for other openings:

Petsmart: Oct. 23

TJMaxx and Home Goods: first week of October

Ross: first quarter of 2018

Walmart: May or June
