Passport Acceptance Day will allow travelers to expedite process

Passport Acceptance Day

Saturday is U.S. Passport Acceptance Day.

The U.S. Department of State officials is urging travelers to get their passports as soon as possible.

Over 52,000 passport applications are being processed at the El Paso passport agency since the start of January .

A 30 percent increase from this time last year.

The State Department anticipates 20 million applications by the end of the year.

Saturday's event will not require an appointment

, but applicants must bring several items

along:

• A state ID or driver's license.

• A photo for the passport, available at photo centers like those at Walgreens stores

• Payment, including major credit cards or money orders. If you bring cash, you will need exact change.

• An adult passport book costs $135, including processing fees.

The event will be held at the passport agency in the Anson Mills building downtown.

Passport processing times for applications on Saturday will take a week or less to process instead of the usual eight weeks.
