Box with practice grenades, ammo found at far east El Paso park
EL PASO, Texas (CBS4) —
El Paso police are investigating after finding a box with military explosives inside at a Far East El Paso park.
The box containing the devices was found at a playground on Holly Springs Drive, near Pebble Hills High School.
Police said there were practice grenades, ammunition and illumination rounds inside the box.
The El Paso police bomb squad got called out about 7 a.m. Tuesday.
There is no word on how they were initially informed of the box or how long it had been in the park.
El Paso police said the items were all dangerous and hazardous to the public.
Spokesperson Enrique Carrillo told CBS4 the items are things someone shouldn’t have had.
Neighbors in the area say it’s scary thinking about where they were found and how they got there.
“A lot of families go to that playground so it’s kind of scary that why would they be there when there’s really nobody there right now,” said neighbor Marsela Cuevas.
Fort Bliss officials said they didn’t know if the items originally came from the military post.
El Paso police said the investigation is closed.
