Police: Man was drinking beer while driving with teen, caused rollover crash
LAS CRUCES, N.M. (CBS4) —
A man accused of child abuse was drinking while driving before causing a rollover crash that injured his 13-year-old nephew, police said.
The crash happened Sunday evening on Highway 70, police said.
When officers responded to the crash, they saw several cans of beer and detected a strong odor of alcohol coming from the driver, Christian Echavarria-Martinez, 29, according to police
Police learned that Echavarria-Martinez left work at around 5 p.m. and was driving east on Highway 70 with his nephew as a passenger.
The man is accused of drinking beer before exiting the highway, and he bought more alcohol from a Pic Quik store on Sonoma Ranch Boulevard, police said.
The man also drank beer as he continued driving on the highway, police said.
As they approached Hollman Road, Echavarria-Martinez took the exit, but lost control of the vehicle, police said.
He overcorrected and caused the vehicle to roll over three times before coming to a stop on the roof, police said.
The two suffered non-life-threatening injuries, police said.
Echavarria-Martinez faces a charge of negligent child abuse and driving while under the influence of intoxicating liquor or drugs.
He has not been booked into the county jail because he was hospitalized, police said. He will receive a criminal summons to appear in court, police said.
