Report: Parents of boy killed by family dogs lied
EL PASO, Texas (CBS4) —
The boy who was mauled to death over the summer was terrified of the family dogs, according to family members who were interviewed by police.
Jacob Brooks, 4, was found dead in his backyard in July.
His parents, Brittany Brooks, 27, and Ashley Brooks, 29, were taken into custody for his death more than two months after the horrific incident.
KFOX14 obtained the women’s arrest affidavits. The report mentioned the cause of death determined by investigators, which a KFOX14 investigation previously revealed.
The report also confirmed what our sister station, KFOX14, mentioned -- that the dogs suffered from abuse and neglect.
According to the police report, neighbors of the Brooks’ family told investigators that, during the year the family lived in the lower valley home, they had noticed animal cruelty and neglect.
The affidavit states that a neighbor had approached the women about the animal abuse. That neighbor took it upon herself to feed the dogs from time to time, according to the report.
Family members of the Brooks’ told investigators Jacob feared the dogs and said that several times they had witnessed Ashley and Brittany disciplining Jacob, telling him they would leave him alone with the dogs when he misbehaved, indicated the report.
It also mentioned that Ashley and Brittany told investigators when Jacob would play in the enclosed trampoline in the backyard, they would periodically check on him.
The report also said investigators said Ashley and Brittany lied about checking up on Jacob while he played in an enclosed trampoline since evidence showed he was found dead away from the trampoline.
The evidence also showed that Jacob was in the backyard for an extended time and that he tried to run away when he was attacked.
Brittany and Ashley were placed into custody on Sept. 29.
Police believe the history of animal abuse, Jacob’s fear of the dogs, delay in checking up on Jacob and the decision to allow Jacob play by himself in the backyard with the dogs were factors that caused his death.
Brittany and Ashley bonded out of jail early this week.
KFOX14 Investigates discovered in August that the women had previously been investigated by Child Protective Services.
