Thousands prepare hike up Mt. Cristo Rey for Easter weekend

Thousands of people from the Borderland and out of town rose before the sun to make their way to Mt. Cristo Rey.

Ruben Escandon Jr. with the Mt. Cristo Rey Restoration Committee said crews have been preparing for the safety of those making the climb this Easter weekend.

Gates open at 6 a.m. officially, but people were already making their way up the mountain at around 5 a.m.

Security is asking guests to wait until security is on the mountain to start your walk for safety reasons.

Police gave a few safety pointers, the first being to travel in groups.

Remember to stay hydrated, crews will be selling beverages at the base and at the top of the mountain.

Everyone should be wearing comfortable shoes.

Dress appropriately for weather.

If you are climbing early in the morning, layers are ideal.

Friday will be a warm day with highs in the 80s.

As for the rest of the weekend, it will be warm and breezy.

Sunland Park police said that as of late, robberies have not been an issue on this mountain.

However, visitors who want to walk up the mountain any other day are being asked by the Sunland Police Department to give them a call first when you arrive and when you leave.
