Tips to save more money during tax free weekend
EL PASO, Texas (CBS4) —
With tax free weekend kicking off on Friday, many people across El Paso are headed to the stores to get the best back to school deals.
The parking lot at Cielo Vista Mall was already packed at 4 p.m. on Friday.
But you can be money wise with ways to stretch your dollar out even further.
Experts say you need to shop smart and have a plan when you do your shopping this year to get the most value.
Here in the Borderland, we tend to shell out quite a bit of money each back to school season.
UTEP economic professor Dr. Tom Fullerton told CBS4 the average El Paso family spends about $530 per child during this time.
He said that is about $88.8 million in spending.
Some tips -- look at special deals online, and know what you need to buy so you don't overspend.
"The savings are great too. We practically get 15 percent off if we apply for a credit card and then not even use it so we thought it was a great deal," said Angie Wilson, who comes to the U.S. every summer from the Ukraine to do her shopping.
"I bargain shop so I compare my stores and look for the best deals and the best quality," said East El Paso resident Monique Grady.
Fullerton advises consumers to do shopping within a short driving radius.
Experts say prices are low this year so you'll save if you don't spend as much money on gas.
