Traffic advisory: 27-hour closure expected this weekend in west El Paso

Eastbound traffic will be driving on a new median for the I-10 overpass and the I-10 eastbound bridge structure will be gone. The switch will stay in place for at least four months.

A 27-hour road closure is expected this weekend on Interstate 10, and will an important intersection for Westside El Paso.

From Sunday at 3 a.m. to Monday at 6 a.m., the I-10 and Mesa Street intersection will be closed.

The closure will go from Redd Road all the way down to Sunland Park Drive heading eastbound on I-10. Drivers can take a detour from Redd Road to Doniphan Drive.

The S. Desert Boulevard frontage road will be closed to through traffic between Redd Road and Thorne Avenue.

Some local businesses are worried about what a Sunday closure could mean to business.

"A normal Sunday here -- I call it family day, you know? Big tables, lots of people -- it's one of the busiest days during the week," said Saul Banuelas, an employee at Tacos Chinampa.

It's not just restaurants that are worried about losing business.

"Customers they show up late because they get caught up in traffic or what not," Mark Dominguez said.

Dominguez, owner of Barber Co. on Mesa, said even during shorter closures clients struggle to make it to appointments.

"As we all know time is money," Dominguez said. So if we're all sitting around waiting for clients that could potentially not show up, it does affect us."

The same goes for Banuelas at Tacos Chinampa.

"There's regulars that come in every Sunday, and that being blocked off, if that's the only way sometimes they may not want to come over here," Banuelas said.

He's worried their busiest day of the week will fall short.

"It might affect the chances of making as much as we do for that certain day," Baneulas said.

The closure is necessary so that crews can demolish the I-10 East Overpass at North Mesa.

Crews will be also be re-striping I-10 Eastbound lanes and demolishing the existing I-10 Eastbound structure. Once the closure is lifted, eastbound traffic will be driving on the new median of the I-10 overpass and the I-10 eastbound bridge structure will be gone. The switch will stay in place for at least four months.

Drivers are encouraged to follow the detour during the closure.
