People gathered in downtown El Paso to honor fallen officers.

A vigil was held at San Jacinto Plaza Thursday night to remember those who were killed in the line of duty.

The service was part of National Police Week.

The El Paso Police Department, El Paso County Sheriff’s Department and El Paso Fire Department were all at the ceremony.

The family of Officer David Ortiz, who was hit and killed a year ago by a Barrio Azteca prison gang member, received support from the community at the vigil.

Ortiz’s brother said the vigil is just another example of how close the El Paso community is.

“It’s an honor, blessing, a blessing. It’s overwhelming. It’s beautiful to see the community come together like this to honor not just my brother, but all our fallen heroes who have passed,” Raymond Ortiz said.

The family said community gatherings like this one are important for the whole nation because it allows people to stop and thank all law enforcement for putting their lives on the line every day.
