Water main break causes sinkhole on Mesa Street

Water main break causes sinkhole on Mesa Street

Crews worked all day Thursday making repairs to a water main break in west El Paso.

El Paso Water spokesperson, Christina Montoya, said the pipe burst around 2 a.m. and crews restored water around 5:30 a.m.

“Our water pipes are unseen, they’re buried, and so you don’t think about them until it’s a problem,” Montoya said.

The water main break caused the road to collapse, but did not technically cause a sinkhole, according to Montoya.

As of Thursday evening, crews filled the hole with concrete. Only one lane on Southbound Mesa Street between Executive Center Boulevard and Eubank Court is open.

“We understand this is a very busy thoroughfare,” Montoya said. “We’re working as fast as we can with that in mind.”

Montoya said breaks like this show the importance of investing in the city's infrastructure.

"I think this incident and many others we have had, in terms of main breaks in our system, highlight the need to really focus on investing in rehabilitating our infrastructure.

El Paso has fewer water main breaks compared to other cities, according to Montoya.
