YISD’s first female academy opens for school year

The first and only all-girls public school in El Paso opened Monday morning on the first day of classes.

School administrators welcomed the inaugural class of the Young Women’s Leadership Academy with 240 sixth- and seventh-grade students at a ribbon cutting ceremony.

Ysleta Independent School District Superintendent, Xavier De La Torre helped celebrate the opening along with school Principal, Malinda Villalobos.

The academy is open to anyone in El Paso County and will focus on college readiness.
