Chihuahuas win game one of PCL championship against OKC

The El Paso Chihuahuas won Game One of the Pacific Coast League Championship Series Tuesday night.

The dogs came back in the bottom of the 8th inning to beat the Oklahoma City Dodgers 7-5 at Southwest University Park.

Game Two is Wednesday night at Southwest University Park and then the series moves to Oklahoma City for the remaining, possibly three games. The series is best of five.

The last time El Paso won a baseball championship, it was 1994.

"It's rare, its special," said General Manager Brad Taylor.

Championship games, don't happen all that often and El Paso fans are excited to have the boys of summer playing into the fall.

"You can't beat it. We've got football we've got baseball what else could you want in El Paso?" said Frank Del Toro.

"Oh this is great because once the season is over we have withdrawals," said Chihuahuas Super Fan Terry.

Terry had her 'luckly' Chihuahua ears on.

"I wear them every game," she said.

Terry and her husband have only missed a 'handful' of games this season, she said. The Chihuahuas first season, they didn't miss a single game. Even when her boys are away, Terry said she watches away games from home by streaming them from the computer and hooking up to the TV.

"We have to support them," she said.

And the team is doing it's part to bring a title back to the Sun City.

"I think it's always great for our city to be mentioned with the words championship and first place, title chasing, those are all positive things," said Taylor.

Of course, going up against the Dodger's minor league club, has some hometown fans jumping ship.

"We're big fans of the Dodger's, we go to LA every year to see them. So this is really fun," said Samuel Molinar who brought his young son Sammy Molinar Jr. to the game too.

The last chance to catch the Chihuahuas at home in 2016 will be Wednesday and tickets are still available.

"Hopefully we will be spilling champagne in the clubhouse in OKC and let someone else clean it up," said Taylor.

If the team wins the PCL championship, they'll head to Memphis for the Triple A National Championship which is one game, winner take all.

Wednesday's game starts at 6:35 p.m. at Southwest University Stadium.

Championship series tickets can be purchased by calling 915-533-BASE or on www.epchihuahuas.com.

The stadium’s box office will also have tickets available during business hours.
