Chihuahuas win season opener against Las Vegas 8-1
EL PASO, Texas —
Walker Lockett allowed only one run in six innings of work Thursday, as the El Paso Chihuahuas defeated the Las Vegas 51s on opening night 8-1. The Chihuahuas are now 3-1 all-time in season-opening games and 3-1 all-time in their first home game of a season.
The Chihuahuas broke a scoreless tie with a four-run bottom of the fourth, with runs coming in on a two-run double by Jabari Blash and a two-run home run by Collin Cowgill. Franchy Cordero’s first Triple-A home run sailed over the left field fence in the bottom of the fifth to make the score 6-0 El Paso.
Carlos Asuaje hit a single to right field in the bottom of the seventh and rounded the bases to score on a play at the plate when Las Vegas outfielder Travis Taijeron overran the ball. Cory Spangenberg went 2-for-3 with a hit by pitch for El Paso, joining Asuaje and Cordero as Chihuahuas with multi-hit games on Thursday.
