Filling Jones' shoes a top priority for UTEP in Ruidoso

UTEP RB Josh Fields carries the ball at training camp in Ruidoso

When UTEP recruited Josh Fields from Americas High School in El Paso, the Miners figured he would have a great chance of filling the shoes of the great Aaron Jones, who is now with the Green Bay Packers. He does, but UTEP has at least two other running backs who want the job as well.

"It's going to be hard to replace the production we got from Aaron," says UTEP head coach Sean Kugler on day one of training camp in Ruidoso. "We have a very talented group of backs, and I thought Fields and Kevin Dove were impressive today."

Fields, Dove and Walter Dawn are all in the mix to carry the ball for the Miners this year, and they're enjoying the competition against each other.

"We're all really great athletes and we're all capable of getting the starting spot," says Dove.

"I'm kind of a small back," says the 5 '9, 185-pound Fields. "So I'm just trying to bulk-up before the season begins."

"I know they're big shoes to fill, but we're not going to miss a beat on it, "says Dawn.

UTEP opens the season on Saturday, Sep 2nd at Oklahoma.
