Montwood Baseball plays for trip to regional playoffs with very heavy heart

Montwood High School senior second-baseman Miguel Soto

Before Montwood's Baseball season started, the Rams were already down in the count as news struck that a player's father died battling medical complications post surgery.

"I think about him every day," senior second-baseman Miguel Soto said about his late dad with tears in his eyes. "But when I step on this field I feel (my dad) and I know he wants to be here and I know he's watching down on me."

According to head coach Willie Romo, Mr. Soto's presence was impossible to ignore - he was everything from an assistant coach to an umpire when called upon.

"(Mr. Soto) was as blue as blue collar gets," Romo said. "After he passed away the guys took his mentality to heart."

"(Mr. Soto) always taught us to never give up," recalled senior shortstop Fernando Zubia. "Like he'd say in Spanish, 'Que nunca se acabe' - don't let it end."

With a 25-5 record, Montwood will try to use Mr. Soto's battle cry as motivation to win an area title and advance to regional playoffs. Something Romo has not done in his 15 years as a Ram. Montwood plays Weatherford HS in Odessa, TX in a best-of-3 series starting Friday.
