75-year-old woman accused of trying to smuggle heroin into El Paso
A 75-year-old woman is accused of trying to smuggle bundles of heroin into El Paso at the port of entry in Tornillo.
U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials said the woman entered the Marcelino Serna port of entry from Ciudad Juarez, Mexico, on Monday just after 1 p.m.
The vehicle she was in was inspected during a secondary exam. CBP officers found suspicious bundles in the center console, officials said. Officers also found bundles in her purse.
All seven packages found tested positive for heroin. The bundles weighed a total of 16.75 pounds.
“This is not the first time we have stopped a senior smuggler and it probably won’t be the last,” said Donna Sifford, CBP port director at the Marcelino Serna port of entry. “Smugglers will try just about anything and this case is another example of why CBP must remain vigilant at all times.”
The 75-year-old woman was arrested and charged with the smuggling attempt.
