Area law enforcement honors fallen brother
J.R. Stewart was laid to rest Saturday afternoon after being killed on Monday.
The retired Las Cruces police officer was escorted by loved ones and dozens of fellow officers.
"We're overwhelmed, but also not surprised by all the support that we've seen for J.R. Stewart," Las Cruces police spokesman Dan Trujillo said.
Trujillo said law enforcement officers from around the region, including federal officers, attended the funeral services.
"We're happy for him and his family for the fact that they're seeing so much support for him," Trujillo said. "I don't know of a single person who did not like him or did not love him."
Las Cruces police dispatch did a final call for Stewart. The dispatcher called out to his unit number, 141, with no response.
"This touched deeply within our department," Trujillo said. "He was such a good person, such a friendly man, and this is the support you see for somebody of that caliber."
