Three suspects in Border Patrol agent assault arrested
Three undocumented persons trying to enter the country illegally near San Elizario Thursday morning assaulted a U.S. Border Patrol agent, according to a spokesman with Border Patrol.
The agent suffered minor bruises and scratches, which did not require medical attention, said Jose Romero, spokesman with the Border Patrol El Paso sector.
The incident happened at approximately 8 a.m. a few blocks away from the Licon Dairy.
The Socorro Police Department, El Paso County Sheriff's Office and Border Patrol combed through the brush on an empty field while a Customs and Border Protection helicopter searched from the sky.
Late enforcement crews were seen leaving the scene just past noon.
According to information by Border Patrol, there has been an increase in assaults on Border Patrol agents.
From Oct. 1, 2015, through Aug. 31, 2016, there were 403 reported assaults on agents nationwide.
This past year during the same time period, Border Patrol saw 678 reported assaults nationwide, officials said.
