Burges football team inspired by alum Aaron Jones

File: Former UTEP running back Aaron Jones attends Packers rookie mini-camp.

UTEP alum and El Pasoan Aaron Jones is becoming a big name in the NFL.

The Green Bay Packers running back graduated from Burges High School in 2013, and he's a big topic at the high school, on and off the field.

The Mustangs could not be more excited that one of their own is doing so well in the NFL.

Sunday was Jones' first start with the Green Bay Packers.

He scored a touchdown and gained 125 rushing yards for a Packers win against the Cowboys.

Manny Herrera is the head track and field coach and a football coach for Burges High School.

He said he coached Jones in track.

Herrera told CBS4 the running back performed well in the classroom and on the field.

“It makes us very proud knowing that a Mustang has gone all the way to the top,” he said.

Some of the high school football players we spoke with said Jones is an inspiration.

“It’s exciting to see. I mean, people always say, like, 'Oh, you’ll never do anything out of El Paso or whatever,'” said Burges High School senior Jaime Moreno. “But, he’s a prime example of someone who has thrived in what he’s been doing.”

The players told us Jones makes them want to play harder, because now they know it could be them playing in the NFL one day.
