Downtown Las Cruces is preparing to host a bowl game celebration for the NMSU football team on Saturday.

Something Mayor Ken Miyagashima is proud of.

“This is history, this is historic,” he said.

The Aggies made history last month by beating Utah State in a thrilling finish at the Arizona Bowl. It’s NMSU’s first bowl game win in 57 years.

Miyagashima promised a party via Twitter if the Aggies won. He is keeping his promise by partnering with the university to host the downtown celebration.

“I think this place is going to be packed. It’s going to be a chance for the public to say thanks to Coach Martin and thanks to the Aggie players,” Miyagashima said. “We couldn't have done this without the help of the city. They've been great about reaching out and wanting to do this for us."

NMSU special events coordinator Nicole Gomez said the celebration will begin at noon. There will be food vendors, prizes and a meet-and-greet with the team.

Gomez said parking will be limited and several streets will be shut down, so she advises fans to plan ahead.

“This is what everyone's been waiting for and it's just a perfect time to be able to give back to the football players who gave back to our city." Gomez said.
