DWI suspect damages power lines, causes roadway closure in Las Cruces
A suspected DWI driver caused havoc on a busy roadway in Las Cruces Friday morning.
Utility crews are working to fix downed power lines along Rinconada Boulevard caused by an early Friday morning crash, said Las Cruces police.
Police said the crash forced the closure between Bataan Memorial West and Northrise Drive for most of Friday.
The eastbound offramp from Highway 70 at Rinconada will also be closed for most of Friday, said police.
A vehicle crashed into a utility pole around 3 a.m. which caused the power lines to droop over the roadway.
El Paso Electric crews expect the repairs to last most of Friday and, for safety purposes, the portion of Rinconada must be closed to traffic.
Police said 20-year-old Destiny Sanchez caused the crash and was not injured. Sanchez was arrested on suspicion of DWI.
Motorists who must travel in the area are asked to reduce speeds, and watch for traffic barriers and utility crews.
