El Paso Animal Services says big adoption events don't increase adoption return rates

City of El Paso Animal Services is hosting an adoption event on Valentine's Day.

El Paso Animal Services is hosting a "Lucky in Love" adoption event on Valentine's Day from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

Michele Anderson with animal services said events like this don't increase the rate at which adopted animals are returned. She said the main reason is that adoption protocol stays the same for big events as it does for every day at the shelter.

"Our adoption process is going to stay consistent whether we have a low-cost adoption event or whether it's any old regular day and you come to adopt at animal services," Anderson said.

Anderson said the shelter always tries to make a good match, by talking with people about their lifestyle and what breeds fit.

"Unfortunately, sometimes it isn't a good fit. You get that pet home and it just really isn't clicking and we understand," she said. "We also don't want the community to feel like they can't come back if it's not a good fit for them."

El Pasoans said hopefully people know what they're choosing when adopting.

"It's a big commitment to adopt an animal because it's like having your own kid," Kennedy Behrens said.
