CNN reports the U.S. will need 2.3 million healthcare workers in the next few years due to an aging population.

The Hospitals of Providence says it's doing everything it can now to keep nurses here in the borderland.

Tasha Hopper, CEO of the Hospitals of Providence Transmountain Campus says they have taken this shortage into consideration and may be ahead of the game.

CBS4 asked for a nurse-to-patient ratio but Hopper was unable to give one. However, she says they are keeping up with the needs of the community.

Hopper says hospitals are seeing baby boomer nurses retire but the additional medical technical schools in El Paso should help offset the shortage.

Adding to the shortage is the aging community needing more attention from doctors and nurses.

Hopper says hiring great quality nurses is competitive, but they're adding incentives to gain and keep nurses.

”What we're doing is partnering with the universities and the colleges here locally to make it easier for people to go to school,” says Hopper.

One of the schools they work closely with is Texas Tech.

Tuition reimbursement is an incentive provided to some people who transfer to the Sun City.

Once the potential doctors and nurses get to El Paso, it’s important to show them what the city has to offer outside of the hospital walls, according to Hopper.

”We really try to focus on making their learning experience here a great one, not just showing them how it can be to work in the hospital, but also, how amazing El Paso is,” says Hopper.

Having them get out in the community so that they get to know what opportunities are here in El Paso so that they choose to stay here.

The addition of new hospitals, like the Northwest Hospitals of Providence Campus, is also helping to keep up with the aging community.
