El Paso man tries fleeing from police during arrest, say police

A convicted DWI offender was pulled over on suspicion of driving drunk this week in east El Paso.

Ramon Mercado, 28, was arrested after he tried running away from police when he was being placed in handcuffs on suspicion of drinking and driving, according to a police news release.

A police officer spotted Mercado Tuesday driving a 2011 GMC Sierra, leaving a parking lot and pulling into a closed business, said police.

When the police officer met with Mercado, he suspected he was intoxicated.

While Mercado was being placed into handcuffs, Mercado tried walking away from the police officer, said police.

He was placed under arrest on suspicion of DWI and evading arrest or detention after a brief struggle.

Police then discovered that Mercado had a previous conviction for DWI.

He was booked into the El Paso County Jail on suspicion of a second DWI and evading arrest or detention.

His bonds were set at $46,000.
