With temperatures likely staying below freezing, it is important to take precautions with your plumbing systems.

CBS4 spoke with a local plumber about what can be expected with the cold weather and how to prepare.

Albert Perez with Liberty Plumbing says it's important to remember your indoor pipes and the outdoor systems such as sprinkler systems and pool systems.

The result of not taking the proper precautions to prepare them for cold weather can cost you quite a bit of money.

"With the weather being as cold as it's going to get, we're expecting to have jobs from leaks. So it's important that everyone takes preventative maintenance to prevent those extra costs," says Perez.

You can take some indoor measures to keep your indoor faucets going with a steady stream and open your cabinets to let heat in.

Perez says those work great for your indoor systems, but the outdoor systems also need to be cared for.

The biggest tip he gives is to wrap your outdoors pipes.

Things that may work can be as simple as newspaper, a towel, a sweater, or you can purchase pipe insulation at a hardware store.

These preventative measures can keep you from having to give the plumber a call.

Sometimes pipes may break, and the leak may go unnoticed; Perez says you should keep an eye on your water bill for any price changes.
