FBI recommends resetting internet routers

The FBI recently released a public service announcement recommending everyone reboots their internet routers.

The bureau said hundreds of thousands of routers are compromised with malware. The announcement states the malware "is able to perform multiple functions, including possible information collection, device exploitation, and blocking network traffic."

CBS 4 On Your Side showed the public service announcement to El Pasoans. Many didn't know about it.

"It's rather frightening that hackers can get into our routers and collect all of our information," David Cistola said.

The FBI said rebooting the router helps the FBI identify the routers that were infected.

El Pasoans said they now plan to do just that.

"Now that I know I'm definitely going to reset it," Isaac Nanaz said. "It could be something really serious."

Experts also recommend resetting your network password.

"There's virtual private networks that are supposed to protect us from some of these things," Cistola said. "It's hard to keep up with."
