It's one of the busiest travel days of the year and crews are working to clear an oil spill in the Lower Valley.

It happened at the intersection of South Americas Avenue and Socorro Road.

500 gallons of oil were reportedly spilled around 4:30 a.m. The spill spread throughout the length of the roadway. To clean up the spill El Paso Fire Department is driving along the roadway, following the trail of oil and spraying a solution to clean it up.

Due to the extent of the spill, they have sprayed the same areas multiple times. One firefighter ran out into the intersection after crews sprayed the area. He said the road was still slippery, so use caution.

El Paso Police Department is also on scene.

TxDOT showed up just before 8 a.m. and dumped sand on the area, but the oil still remains visible.

So far no word on what caused the spill, or how long it will take to finish the clean up.

Drivers should take Alameda Avenue or North Loop Drive as alternate routes until the area is clear.
