Local cosmetologist killed in hit-and-run days before opening up salon
El Paso police are still searching for the driver who hit and killed a man on Railroad Drive early Saturday morning.
Meanwhile, the cosmetology world of El Paso is trying to come to terms after losing one of their own. Calls have been coming in to the salon where Augustin David Nelson used to work. Fellow cosmetologists are remembering their friend while hoping for justice.
“Very happy person, very lovable and with a great sense of humor,” Elizabeth Mora said.
Mora was Nelson’s cosmetology instructor.
“To me he was someone that I admired and I just loved his presence,” Mora said.
After he graduated three years ago, Nelson got a job at Walk of Fame Salon.
“He was very happy and whenever he would come in we would joke around,” Erika Moreno said.
Moreno was Nelson’s boss. She went to his home Saturday when he wouldn’t answer his phone. It wasn’t until later that she found out what happened.
“We were all in shock and the clients too. They’ve been calling us,” Moreno said.
El Paso police said Nelson died in a hit-and-run while walking near Railroad Drive in the northeast early Saturday morning. Police believe a person driving a 1998 to 2002 black Honda Accord is responsible. It most likely has damage to the front left bumper, a damaged radiator and is missing the driver's side mirror.
Friends said Nelson was just days away from achieving his dream of opening his own salon.
“Extremely sad and devastated to know that someone who worked so hard to achieve his goals and overcome so much in his life was almost there and he was robbed of that opportunity,” Mora said.
Now they’re asking for answers from the public to help bring justice for their hard-working friend.
“I pray and I hope that we can catch the person that is responsible for this fatality because we need to get closure and he deserves to be remembered in a beautiful way,” Mora said.
