Man accused of shooting the father of his girlfriend's child in northeast El Paso

One man is in critical condition after he was shot with a rifle, El Paso police said.

Benito Gomez, 25, was injured Thursday evening after he was shot outside a home on the 5500 block of Vancouver Street in Northeast El Paso, said El Paso police.

They said Lucio Castaneda, 24, shot Gomez.

CBS4 was at the scene following the alleged shooting.

Police said investigation revealed that Castaneda and his girlfriend went to Gomez's home to pick up her child.

They said Gomez is the child's father.

At some point, Castaneda and Gomez got into a fight outside the home, according to police.

Investigators said it escalated when Castaneda got out of the car and pointed a rifle at Gomez.

At some point, Gomez picked up a rock and was shot, investigators said.

Gomez was taken to the hospital around 10:30 p.m., said police.

Castaneda was taken into custody by El Paso police. He was charged with aggravated assault and booked on a $150,000 bond.
