EL PASO, Texas -- The El Paso Police Department said leaving your car running to warm up is illegal in Texas.
The cold weather is starting, and many people like to get into a warm car before leaving to work or school.
Police said by doing that, citizens are creating an open window for thieves to steal your car.
Police said if that happens, not only will you be upset about having your car stolen, but you will also receive a citation.
Police said that law does not apply to vehicles that have remote start up systems and the key fob is with the owner.
The Texas Transportation Code 545.404.- Unattended Motor Vehicle states a person may not leave a vehicle unattended without stopping the engine, locking the ignition, removing the key from the ignition, setting the parking brake effectively and if standing on a grade, turning the front wheel to the curb or side of the highway.
Police said to report any suspicious activity or if your car gets stolen to 915-832-4400.
