Silver City man leads police in chase; suspect arrested, hospitalized
A man who attacked his mother and stole her vehicle in Las Cruces was shot by state police in Silver City Thursday morning, said police.
Michael Aguirre, 41, of Silver City, was arrested by New Mexico State Police.
Silver City-area authorities were alerted around 1:10 a.m. to be on the lookout for a white 2002 Toyota 4-Runner taken from Las Cruces, said NMSP officials.
Around 1:22 a.m., authorities spotted the vehicle and began chasing after Aguirre, officials said.
Police reported Aguirre turned onto Casa Loma Road in Silver City, made a U-turn and struck a Silver City Police Department patrol car. The officer fired at Aguirre striking him in the neck, police said.
Aguirre was taken to University Medical Center of El Paso by air ambulance with non-life threatening injuries, the release said.
Earlier this year, Aguirre was charged with domestic violence and receiving a stolen firearm in two separate cases.
State police reported Aguirre, before the incident in Silver City, had allegedly cut off a court-ordered ankle monitor in Las Cruces, attacked his mother and stole her vehicle.
The name of the officer involved will not be released until later, officials said.
This incident is being investigated by the New Mexico State Police Investigations Bureau.
