Thousands of fans prepare to cheer on the Aggies in Arizona Bowl
EL PASO, Texas (CBS4) —
Thousands of tickets have already been sold for New Mexico State’s first bowl game since 1960.
Many Aggie fans are getting ready to hit the road to Tuscan, Arizona, to watch NMSU take on Utah State.
More than 27,000 fans packed Memorial Stadium during the win against South Alabama, and many people from Las Cruces plan on making the trip to Arizona to support their Aggies.
Aggie fans have been waiting for this showdown for over 57 years.
Today, people, including Eric Jimenez and Margo Torres, purchased several tickets for the big game.
"I've purchased five tickets. I'm taking me, my aunt, my girlfriend, brother and her son and we're driving,” Jimenez said.
"I bought 10 tickets to support the team. I think it's an exciting time for the team and make history and it's close enough to go to,” Torres said.
Tuesday, CBS4 spoke with Kym Adair, senior vice president of marketing for Nova Home Loans, which is sponsoring the 2017 Arizona Bowl game.
She said over 7,000 tickets for the game have already been sold in Las Cruces.
"I've been going to games since I was younger so it's definitely extremely exciting to finally get to see them go, and since it's so close, I had to take the opportunity to go,” Jimenez said.
Adair said an additional 13,000 tickets have been purchased by different companies in Arizona so that active military members, teachers and first responders; can attend the game for free.
She said the Arizona Bowl game is special because
“100 percent of the net proceeds of this bowl go to charity and that’s really what our core focus is -- to make sure dollars get into the pockets of charities."
Adair said that Arizona is anticipating a 15% increase in attendance for this bowl game compared to last year's game because of the proximity of the two teams.
"It's close enough to go to and it's during the holidays, where many people take time off, so I think it's an opportunity that will hopefully happen again but it's hasn't happened in this go, so let's do it. Let's support the Aggies,” Torres said.
If you haven’t purchased your ticket to the Arizona Bowl game, you have until Dec. 22 to do so.
You can buy tickets at the Pan American Center ticket office.
The game is on Dec. 29 at 5:30 p.m. EST.
