EL PASO, Texas (KFOX14/CBS4) — Congresswoman Veronica Escobar held a press conference Friday while hosting a delegation of five Democratic members of Congress in El Paso to see firsthand how immigration policies are affecting communities along the southern border.
Escobar took congresswoman Judy Chu (CA-28); congressman Mark Pocan (WI-02); congresswoman Madeline Dean (PA-04); congresswoman Sara Jacobs (CA-51) and congresswoman Andrea Salinas (OR-06) to Sacred Heart Church, CBP's processing center, El Paso County's migrant support services center and ports of entries. The delegation also met with leaders of non-governmental organizations in El Paso.
"We do the wall, the Border Patrol conversations, the CPC visit, and we talk to NGOs, and we talk to migrants, and we talk to the shelter networks and we visit the county processing facility," said Escobar.
Escobar said she has invited Republicans to come visit the border but they have so far refused to join her. She added a bipartisan visit would offer a different perspective than what Republicans are used to when visiting the border.
"Republican visits frequently are a visit to the wall, conversations with Border Patrol, sometimes some nighttime drive along [with Border Patrol]," said Escobar.
Escobar and Republican Rep. María Elvira Salazar of Florida announced a new bipartisan immigration reform bill Tuesday.
Escobar said they are planning a visit to the border in the near future.
